Bicycle Culture Center / Women's Safety

Bicycles, first produced some 190 years ago, have developed to become the most basic form of conveyance of everyday life. On display in Bicycle Plaza at the Bicycle Culture Center are bicycles that give a visual picture of the history of the bicycle. Women’s Safety
In Japan, in the Meiji 20s decade (1887-1896), the Safety bicycle was imported for use by persons working for the Post Office and by military personnel.
The bicycle was very expensive, costing equivalent to a current price of 10 million yen. It enjoyed widespread popularity with the beginning of domestic production. In 1900, law in regard to bicycles was established. At the end of the Meiji period (1868-1912), bicycles for women began to be sold.
