Sony Archives / Paper tape
The Sony Archives communicates the spirit of the Sony Corporation, founded over 60 years ago as the Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation, and serves as a venue where visitors can learn about the history of the company by viewing how the company products have changed over time. When tape recorders were first developed, there was no plastic tape in Japan and cellophane was initially tried but this turned out to be unusable because the material absorbed moisture and ended up stretching. In the end, tape was made through trial and error by coating a customized paper comprising craft paper blended with hemp with a ferric oxalate magnetic powder that was made by frying in a fry pan using either a spray gun or a brush.
