Various plastics Thermoplastics resins
Resin name Characteristics Usage
Polyvinyl chloride resin
(PVC)
Soft products can be produced by the addition of a plasticizer. Chemical resistance, good electrical insulating properties (Low heat resistance. Gives off hydrogen chloride when heated) Packaging and agricultural films, wire coating, floor covering, tube fitting, flat plates, corrugated plates, building material, bolts, resistant tableware
High-density polyethylene
(HDPE)
Colorless and transparent; electrical insulating properties, good chemical resistance (Low solvent resistance, brittleness, low softening point) Colorless and transparent; electrical insulating properties, high chemical resistance (Low solvent resistance, brittleness, low softening point)
Polystyrene
(PS)
Good workability, electrical characteristics, water resistance; odorless and nontoxic Household electric appliances, convenience goods, furniture, foamed material, wrapping paper
AS resin
(AS)
Transparent; high strength; higher heat resistance, weather resistance, and oil resistance than polystyrene (Slightly lower formability than polystyrene) Electrical apparatus, stationery, general merchandise
ABS resin
(ABS)
High toughness, high gloss, chemical resistance, high oil resistance Housings for electrical apparatus, automotive parts, material for office equipment
Methacrylic resin
(PMMA)
Colorless and transparent; weather resistance, good optical properties Signboards, displays, lenses, wind shields, illuminators
Low-density polyethylene
(LDPE)
Crystalline resin, light weight, flexibility, electrical insulating properties, chemical resistance, water resistance, good heat-sealing characteristics (Poor printability and adhesive properties) Packaging and agricultural films, bottles, electrical insulating material, general merchandise, tote boxes
Polypropylene
(PP)
More transparent, more resistant to repeated bending, and has a higher softening point than polyethylene (Poor printability and adhesive properties) Generally the same as the uses of polyethylene; containers, tableware, biaxial oriented film, flat yarn
Polyamide
(PAI)
Crystalline resin, high toughness, oil resistance, abrasion resistance, good gas barrier properties (High moisture absorption) Fiber, machine parts, packaging films, automotive parts
Polyacetal
(POM)
Crystalline resin; similar in properties to polyamide; high toughness, creep resistance, heat resistance, high solvent resistance Gears, bearings, automotive parts, office equipment parts
Polycarbonate
(PC)
High toughness, electrical properties, heat resistance, excellent weather resistance; transparent Electrical components, machine parts, general merchandise, window glass, packaging films
Denatured polyphenylene ether
(PPE)
High toughness, heat resistance, creep resistance, high steam resistance Electrical components, machine parts
Polybutylene terephthalate
(PBT)
Crystalline resin; heat resistance, electrical insulating properties, gas barrier properties, good chemical resistance Electrical components, automotive parts, machine parts, films
Polysulfone
(PSF)
High toughness, heat resistance, creep resistance, chemical resistance Electrical components, general merchandise
Polyphenylene sulfide
(PPS)
Heat resistance, flame retardance, chemical resistance, electrical insulating properties Automotive parts, electrical components, machine parts, films, sheets
Liquid crystal polymer
(LCP)
High strength, high modulus of elasticity, thin-wall flowability, vibration characteristics, heat resistance, flame retardance Electronic components (relays, connectors, sockets, sensors)
